The power of guilt and shame.

In this account of the story found in the Gospel of Luke, it says that as the rooster crowed, Peter denying Christ a third time, Jesus looks across the courtyard and their eyes lock.  Oh, the agony of this moment.  I can’t even begin to describe what Peter would have felt as he stood frozen in this moment of betrayal and denial.  The Bible says that he breaks the gaze, runs out of the city and weeps bitterly.

Have you ever felt stuck in a moment…and just like the U2 song… you can’t get out of it.  Reliving the moment over and over in your mind, obsessing about it, justifying it, or just trying to bury it and move on pretending it never happened.  None of which actually makes it any better.  I know I have… and it’s not a very pretty place to be.  It’s these moments, our darkest hours, the deepest most painful moments of our lives, where the enemy sneaks in and whispers lies into our souls.  And sadly, we are so broken, that the lies are truly believable.
